Replica of original garden gnome
Garden gnomes may not be as modern as you may think. Although garden gnomes are associated with the lawns of the 20th and 21st century, garden gnomes made their debut in the mid 1800s. A German sculptor by the name of Phillip Griebel is responsible for creating the common garden gnome.
Before creating the iconic garden gnome, Griebel sculpted ceramic and terracotta woodland animals. Gnome legends were exceedingly popular in Griebel's area and he soon began to fashion sculptures of the mythical creature; short little men with pointed hats. These tiny men become incredibly popular once they were entered into local markets. Garden gnomes remain vastly popular today. Griebel's descendants still manufacture garden gnomes in Germany.
